Irazu
is the name of my flash project I am working on. I developed it in my Animation Honours year and had so many people say that they would want to watch it if it was animated I thought, why arn’t I trying to develop it. I have started to develop it in flash and pre-production art is found at my Irazu Website

So what is it about?
Here is the underlying story; Irazu is the story of Dr. Pequita Florence, a young zoologist who works in her father’s science facility breeding sloths. Set in the near distant future South America, Sloths have become highly endangered. From young, Pequita had an interest in them and now works to save them.
One evening she finds a swipe card, granting her access to a restricted elevator. This takes her deep down into the facility where she not only finds hundreds of caged sloths which she bred (being fed some kind of ooze) but also a huge room filled with tanks of giant mutated dead sloths.
Her father has been experimenting on the sloths, trying to mutate them into large creatures able to dig in the mines of South America with their huge claws.

Apon finding one mutated sloth which is still alive and suvived the mystery experiements, a security guard is instructed to get rid of Pequita. The guard fires his gun, it misses, rebounds and shattered one of the liquid filled tanks holding a dead sloth. The water spills onto the floor, hitting a cable which shocks Pequita. She is thrown across the room into the glass window of a room where the living sloth Irazu is kept. Just as the security guard approaches her unconcious body, Irazu breaks out of his enclosure, grabs Pequita, and escapes from the facility into the jungle.
From here we follow Pequita and the Sloth called Irazu on their attempts to save their jungle, stop her father’s experiements and learn about Pequita’s new powers.

So, for all the artwork; sketches, storyboards, colour designs, character designs etc; visit my Irazu Production Website and feel free to tell me what you think. If your from a studio or company and see the potential in Irazu, email me and maybe we could work something out…wink wink

The posts have been imported to here, but as I understand it, you have to click the post to see the images…

Storyboards & Rough Backgrounds

Irazu storyboards are done before background designs, therefore I
can see if there are any re-uses & how the backgrounds are going
to be layed out to best frame the characters.

colour, colour, colour…

I just did some colour palettes, picking colours from photos or pictures for future reference…they become very inspirational and helpful.

And here is just a little sketch I did the other day, nothing to do with the above colours by the way.

Promoted etc…

Well, I am happy to announce that I have been promoted at the studio I work for. This is a fantastic opportunity for me to move forward and upwards.
Also, I am currently working on the storyboards for ‘Irazu’ ep.1 This will be an introduction for the main two characters. I have to also start […]

Background Style Study

I was building the environment sketch (seen in a previous post) in flash, just to test out how it looks and the time it takes. Although I will be finishing the image off, I have decided to stick to my guns and do the backgrounds in a simple block style in photoshop as I can […]

New Irazu Vinyl & Plush Toys…..

Well, I can dream cant I…

Colour Scripts, Tests, Widgets….etc

I think its important to at least have done one colour test for any kind of animation production. You get a head start on lighting and colour co-ordination between the characters and backgrounds. It saves a lot of um-ing and arh-ing when building a background for the scenes.
These images (above & below) were taken from […]

Sketched this over a few lunch breaks.

Pequita Florence model…update

I have updated Pequita’s character design. You will see slight differences that I should of applied in the first place…and since she is a girl on the net, I can give her a little more ‘perkyness’ in her chest.
Below is the old turnaround I did.

Completed My Honours Project

Well, I have come to the end of my Animation Honours Degree and bound my ‘Art Of Irazu’ book. I have great comments from fellow students and friends. I would love to make this into a feature, series, game or comic.

For now I’ll keep it in my back pocket.
Thanks…

Over the hills and far away…

This if the final photoshop image above, much softer

Here is one of a few colour tests I did before the final painting, they look very toonish

This is the design for the environment

other environments for robot monkeys

The monkeys are housed in a large air-hanger like room, sitting on caonveyor belts, waiting to be sent out.
The monkeys can emerge from these exits on the tower…

…or exit out into the forest.

Lab

This is the lab where the sloths are experimented on. The colour test is below, i havent really finished the final but I think it communicates a cold environment.

Tankroom

This is one of the first ideas that came to my mind for ‘Irazu’. A tank room that went deep down and contained tanks of dead failed mutant sloths. I like the purple environment, it reflects the mysteriousness of Pequita’s discovery and the events that may occur at the end of the bridge. In the […]

Flash Environment

Here is a background of the tank environment in macromedia flash, the image below is a colour key in photoshop

Watch ‘Vial of Youth’

You can finally watch my film, ‘Vial of Youth’.
16th Century Hungary. Countess Erszebeth Bathory is obsessed with her youth and determined to prolong her beauty, even if it meant others would die.

Spooky Cage Room

I have experimented with different angles of the cage room (handpainted), where the sloths are kept before experimentation.
The final images are in digital paint.

Early Concepts

Here are some island images that got me thinking about the ‘Irazu’ Concept

Lift Shaft Escape

This is the lift shaft that Irazu escapes through carrying Pequita. He climbs up, latches onto the beams and pulls the doors open with his claws. The guard who shot at Pequita lays at the bottom of the shaft.

These are different views and moods of the jungle and the tower from colour key to finished digital painting.

Jungle Environment

Here you can see the process from sketch to colour experimenting to final digital painting. Its the view of the science facility from within the jungle. The warm colours direct your eye towards the tower breaching through the jugle growth.

Environment and Colour Design

This is the lab or science tower where Pequita worked and Irazu escaped from after she was knocked out (seen in the colour script). The tower is where the scientists work and Pequita thought she was doing good, breeding sloths. When actually she was part of her father’s evil plan to use mutant sloths to […]

Voodoo Village Concept

Im experimenting with colour and mood here. I wanted to create a voodoo village where Pequita lives near. The village people are actually not that nasty but have an image to uphold. I started with a digital colour thumbnail and then tried a larger version with more detail. I also tried a blue version […]

Colour Script

This is a colour script for a few sequences I wrote. It basically outlines the discovery of the collection of dead experimental mutant sloths and Irazu.

Colour Designs

Character Concepts

Pequita’s uniform reflects the environment she starts with, a dull blue-grey for lab work. Her bright hair indicates a rebeliousness.
These are a bunch of character and colour designs of Dr. Pequita Florence and her giant mutated sloth Irazu. I named him after a Volcano I believe is in South America. I also played with styles […]
